Economic Data

A Major Visitor Attraction
As a recognised metropolitan area, Romford attracts more than 22 million visitors every year. It is one of East London’s largest town centres and ranks in the top 15 shopping localities of the South East. There are more than 400 quality shops, along with vibrant cafés, restaurants and leisure facilities including gyms and 2 cinemas. There is a major leisure complex encompassing swimming pools and an ice rink planned for the heart of the town centre. Romford also has an Office Quarter which hosts more than 80 businesses in an environment where rental rates are considerably lower than the likes of Canary Wharf.

A Key Manufacturing Hub
The Havering Riverside Employment Area at London Riverside in the Rainham area is a key hub for manufacturing businesses and employment opportunities in the Thames Gateway development area. It is home to more than 500 firms ranging from small and medium businesses across a variety of sectors to major international companies. It is also home to important centres of learning and business support such as the Centre of Engineering and Manufacturing Excellence (CEME), which included extensive Gold award winning conference facilities, and Havering College’s Southern Campus.

It also has the largest reservoir of available brownfield strategic industrial land in London. The newly opened East London University Technical College (Elutec) on the CEME campus offers a fantastic education centre for young people interested in manufacturing, engineering, design and technology and has been created and delivered in partnership with distinguished businesses such as Ford and Network Rail and universities including University College London.

A Strong and Unified Business Voice
The London Riverside Business Improvement District (BID) plays an active role in driving the development of the area in response to local business needs and wants. The BID has successfully lobbied for extended bus routes in the area, has improved safety through better CCTV and security patrols and has created a strong and unified business voice that regularly engages with important bodies such as the local authority and Transport for London.
